The 2010 Guntersville Lady Wildcats Volleyball team will enter this season with the approach to "enjoy the journey."
Coach Jimmy Latta explains that the team is learning about John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.
"I shared this with the team 2 years ago, but after his passing this summer, I wanted to share it again with my newcomers," Latta said. "We have adopted one of his quotes for our poster, ‘Success is not a destination, it is a journey’."
Latta says his team is all about enjoying the ride this season and learning everything we can possibly learn along the way.
That ride could go along way again this season as the Lady Cats return lots of talent in veterans Cati Leak, Taylor Gibson, Meredith Moore, Mallory Moore, and Courtney Redington.
Leak totaled 627 kills and 473 digs and Gibson contributed over 1500 assist last season.
Jordan Glassco, Savannah Johnson, Cara Lee Mason, Kaitlyn Bannister, and Ayla Kirby will be the top newcomers to assist the team this season.
The Lady Cats are most recent State Championship and that is still fresh in the minds of many, but Latta says that won’t affect his team.
"We don’t really talk about defending anything," Latta said. "We just try to get better every time we take the court. Every tournament we enter, our goal is to win, whether it is a Serve Off Tournament to start the season, or the State Tournament at the end of the year."
The team must replace three starters lost to graduation. Adele Woodall, Katelin Gray, and Chloe Whitaker are now gone.
Over the summer, the girls returned to Team Camp at the University of Florida. Latta said the team face some really tough competition and came up a few points short of the SEC Championship Match. The ‘Cats finished 3rd overall out of 49 teams at the camp.
The GHS volleyball season is now underway and several marquee matches lay ahead with top 6A programs like Huntsville, Grissom, Bob Jones, Hoover, and Mountain Brook.
