The Dancing as Stars fundraiser raised $20,000 for the Marshall County Home Place.
David and Shirley Chupp won both awards - The Judge’s Choice Award and The People’s Choice Award - in the Dancing as Stars competition. The Judge’s Choice Award was determined by outside judges knowledgeable in dance. The People’s Choice Award was determined by a monetary vote. David and Shirley raised $2700 in their effort to support Home Place.
The net proceeds from Dancing as Stars goes into a fund set aside for building 4 more apartments to help homeless families get back on their feet - a hand UP, not a hand OUT. Home Place has now raised approximately 20% of the needed $425,000 to build the apartments. Property on the corner of Hill Ave and Ringold St in Guntersville has been already purchased.
Marshall County Home Place, which is a United Way partner agency, provides transitional housing to homeless families. In 2011, 123 applications involving 295 people needing assistance were accepted.
