
October 16, 1:30pm. Joey Brackner, director of the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, will talk about the importance of pottery in the Appalachian region of Alabama with emphasis on potters in our area.
Local pottery collectors Danny Maltbie and Eddie Scott will mount a display of local pottery. There is no charge for the lecture series, but please call RSVP to register, 571-7734.
Since 1985, Brackner has undertaken numerous special projects for the Alabama State Council on the Arts. These include: co-production of Unbroken Tradition a film documentary on Alabama folk potter, Jerry Brown; and editorship of Tributaries, the Journal of the Alabama Folklife Association. He is also the Folklife section editor for online Encyclopedia of Alabama. Brackner is the author of Alabama Folk Pottery (2006) published by the University of Alabama Press. The book is a culmination of some twenty years of research on the subject. His other research interests traditional graveyard decoration and southern horticultural traditions.
Joey Brackner is a native of Fairfield, Alabama. He received a B. A. in Anthropology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1977 and a M. A. in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981. He was Humanities Scholar in Residence at the Birmingham Museum of Art prior to being hired as state folklorist in 1985.
