It was that time again, Wednesday the 22 of June. We were all gathered together, this time at the “Docks” in Goose Pond Colony, around 28 miles northeast on highway 79. We are retired, and anyone from around early retirement age to “Don’t go there” age, always enjoys the fun at this monthly event.
Louise Cowart and Rose Myers checked us in, one by one. We received new personal nametags, ran the special elastic bands through the hole in the badge holders, and hung them around our necks. We met old acquaintances and discussed this, that and the other thing. Tom Hodges, a member of the group, gave us a little information about the area, such as the lake origination and the Goose Pond Colony community. We were all anticipating another “mouth-watering” meal as the chef told us about the great buffet waiting for us. We are the “Gadabouts,” also known by our Indian name, “Someone who roams about in search of amusement or social activity.”
It all started last year when the announcement was made that Louise Cowart would like to start a group; people who would like to eat great food, explore fine eating places in the area, and get to know each other. Several of us at the R.S.V.P (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) recognized the merit of such a group; the name “Gadabouts” was adopted, after being voted upon, and “walla,” The Gadabouts were born.
The Gadabouts have eaten at the Ichiban Restaurant in Guntersville, the Sicilian Restaurant in Arab, the Ruth Bed and Breakfast in Ruth, Wintzells Oyster House in Guntersville, Outlaw Steak House in Guntersville, The Lake Guntersville State Park Lodge, and Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant in Guntersville,
This is just one of many great events that take place at the R.S.V.P in Guntersville. The offices are located behind Mike’s Merchandise Mart on Highway 431 where the orange awning identifies our entrance. It was a wonderful learning experience when we listened to the experts, Bob and Martha Sargent as they expounded their vast knowledge of the Hummingbird population of our great state of Alabama. Several beautiful pictures were taken and the experience was written up in our June 2 edition.
There are many varied and exciting events taking place at the R.S.V.P. headquarters each day. As an example of the venue, there are classes on things from quilting to computers; speakers that give programs like the Hummingbird program; upcoming things like “Wild Wednesdays!” Each Wednesday in July, Patti Donnellan, the Guntersville State Park naturalist, will tell us about the wildflowers that grow in this area and the many beautiful butterflies and birds living in this enchanting Guntersville/Albertville area.
Mrs. Rose Myers, who handles the promotion work at R.S.V.P, is waiting to hear from all of you who have not investigated these great opportunities. There is something for everyone, so if you are searching for something to do, give her a call at 571-7734, and don’t forget the area code of 256 (like I do frequently). You will be glad you did.
