The answer lies in one simple word – choice. Everything that you are dealing with right now and everything that you accomplish (or miss) come back to a choice that you made. It is so simple that we often miss it completely. Or maybe it is just that choosing is not as easy as it sounds.
I finished writing my first novel two years ago. I had a friend read it and it inspired him to start yet another novel. He chose to finish this novel, Stars of Kanri, with a little encouragement from me. One day at karate class he met a man that was involved in a publishing company.
A few weeks later and S.P. Dorning from Blountsville, Alabama had his first book published. It happened because he chose to complete his book. My first novel is still in the editing stage because I have chosen not to make a priority. That might change if I join a karate class though.
Our flower garden was part of the Regional Iris Tour for this area in 2005. That same month we discovered we were expecting our third son. I chose not to do anything else in the garden. The next year the weeds returned with a vengeance. I think they were making up for the hard work we put in to keeping them out the year before. The draught made it difficult to work in the garden so I chose not to.
This year I want to be able to enjoy the flowers once again. Others have also asked about purchasing some of the flowers that we have in the garden. I choose to get the beds back to where they were five years ago. My choices up to now are going to make this choice even more difficult.
Sixteen years ago I chose to marry my friend. He had been by my side through so many ups and downs and twists and turns that I knew it could never get worse than it had been. I was wrong. But each time my husband annoys me or makes me want to rip my hair out, I choose to love him through it. He would say the same about me.
It is easier for me to say that my husband made me act the way I was acting, or the draught kept me from working in the garden, or the busy schedule of homeschooling three boys made it impossible to finish editing my novel. But none of that has kept me from the computer, the television or parties. I have made choices every step of the way.
The strength of that ability – the one that allows me to choose – became a reality to me this last week. A series of events left me making a choice, just one at a time, that brought me to a new place in my life. At any point along the journey I could have made a different choice. Each one choice made the next step possible.
What choices are you making?
