Discouragement lurks around every mistake, misstep or missed opportunity. It does not hide in the bushes and only comes out of cover when there is some digging and prodding and hard work. Discouragement seems more like a predator that is waiting to pounce on its next victim.

Encouragement prances around like a deer. It can be elusive or skittish and often does hide in the bushes only appearing at the dawn or dusk of a moment. Capturing a glimpse of encouragement takes patience, persistence and plenty of effort but that one moment of encouragement can serve to carry you through many moments of struggle or tests that may lie in the future.

Bringing encouragement to the same open place where discouragement attempts to reside does not require special talents. There are not unique tools that must be purchased for the sake of finding encouragement. Some simple tips combined with a strong determination will help you to spot encouragement even when it is hiding in the edge of your vision.

Encouragement can come from a song. Record a dozen of those songs that make you want to dance, sing or smile and then listen to them when the going gets tough and you will see the tough get going.

Encouragement can come from words. Keep a folder, box or bulletin board with those words that give you the warm fuzzy feeling that can build the courage you need to take on the world.

Encouragement can come from a location. Find a corner of the world, a corner of the yard or just a corner of the house that you can make some peace and quiet. Take time on a regular basis to sit in your special corner and reflect on the accomplishments of the past, but more importantly to reflect on the hopes and possibilities of the future.

Encouragement can come from memories. Keep a journal of the praises, wins, and accomplishments both big and small. Read the journal OUT LOUD when times are tough or when your emotions are running down.

Encouragement can come from others. Build up a group of people who believe in you and speak that belief into your life on a regular basis. Set aside time to meet regularly with this encouragement team.

Life happens. The sooner that you realize and accept that fact then the sooner you can make a plan to stay positive and encouraged no matter what might come your way. There are always two ways to look at a situation. You can trip over the discouragement or you can uncover the encouragement hidden away in any situation that you may face.

Encouragement may not always be as easy to find as discouragement but it is not impossible. Discovering the hiding place of that encouragement takes practice, patience and persistence. The most important step that you can take in your journey to expose the encouragement is to open your eyes. Look to all the good, positive and uplifting things in your life and choose to focus on those.
